Just one month: LockCon 2012 (Nicholasville, Kentucky)
Just one more month before LockCon. This is gonna be cool!
-------------------------------------
http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/06/lockcon2012-1.jpg (http://toool.us/lockcon/index.html)

If heaven exists, LockCon (http://toool.us/lockcon/registration.html) is it for us mortal lockpickers. And in one month from now it will be held (July 17/18/19)!

LockCon 2012 in the US

After a number of very successful LockCon conferences organized in Europe, this time the circus will travel to the US.

It is never easy to find a good spot for this kind of event but this year we found the best possible location: the headquarters of LSI (Lockmasters Security Institute) (http://www.lsieducation.com/) in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

The LSI facility is just perfect for LockCon because of the many areas where the LSI instructors normally train their customers (http://www.lsieducation.com/pdf/lsi_tri_sml.pdf) on how to open various kind of locks (http://www.lsieducation.com/courses/2012schedule.html). These rooms will offer the right atmosphere for our hands-on sessions and championships. And of course there is the in-house Harry Miller (http://www.lsieducation.com/museum/index.html) lock-museum (http://www.lsieducation.com/pdf/lsi_and_museum_flyer.pdf) (that offers napkins so you do not drool over their rare locks (http://blackbag.nl/?p=1392))

One thing that I would like to point out is that we have the same agreement with LSI as with Peter Field. Both LSI and Mr. Field will not talk to us about how to open locks. LSI only lets us use the facility on certain hours of the day and Peter Field will only talk about locks in general (in a very nice and detailed way I might add). As he said before: I am here to talk about locks. How to open them is up to you ..

The World Championships of lockpicking, Impressioning and manipulation

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2011/04/open200-1.jpg

Besides many presentations (by Peter Field and others) and hands on sessions (spectacular!) LockCon will also host the first world championships of lockpicking, safe manipulation and impressioning! There will be people coming from all over the place (to name a few: Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, UK and of course the US) to see who will be the fastest lockpicker in the world. And there are very nice prices to win as our sponsors are known to be very generous. I am curious how people like Julian Hardt (http://blackbag.nl/?p=1085) and Jos Weyers (http://blackbag.nl/?p=785) will do against the people (http://blackbag.nl/?p=698) in the US.

Want to join or compete?

There are still a few seat available although getting in may not be as easy as it sounds. We do have a rather strict policy of having to know you before letting you in. Having said that, we can always be persuaded if you have a kick-ass presentation to give on lock-related topics. Memebers of Aloa and/or Savta are also welcome to (try to) register.

You can always try to register (http://toool.us/lockcon/registration.html) or visit our CFP page (http://toool.us/lockcon/lockcon_cfp.pdf) and see how far you get.

Hope to see you all in one month from now in Kentucky!

Picking 17th century cultural heritage locks
Picking open 'one out of four' 17th century treasure boxes in some sort of museum. Pretty special if you consider nobody alive knows what is inside! The remaining three boxes will be opened when we return from LockCon.
-------------------------------------
If the key to something you do not use every day is lost, it can take a little while before a locksmith (http://intact-noodopening.nl/Welkom.html) is called. In this case it took them a couple of hundred years to find us!

But that is ok. I like mysteries, especially if I can help solving them. Last week was good for mystery solving and there still are some (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/fichet-combo-wm.jpg) to be solved.

We were invited into some sort of museum where they had four 17th century treasure-boxes without key. They did send some images (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/17th-century-deposit-safe.jpg) that allowed me to do some Research (https://twitter.com/barrywels/statuses/215815474599043072) (via barrywels (https://twitter.com/barrywels) on twitter).

When we arrived we inspected the boxes and padlocks with endocsopes and decided they could probably be picked (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/lever-lock_picked.jpg) with simple steel wire bent in an L shape (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/hooks.jpg). The wire then moves the lever (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/lever-lock-picked.jpg).

In a little while we did mange to open a number of padlocks (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/schatkist-17-eeuw.jpg) and one of the boxes.

Currently three 17th century treasure boxes (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/17-th-centurty-treasure-box.jpg) are waiting to be opened and at least one of them contains a number of ‘heavy objects’. This is interesting, especially if you consider the boxes were used to transport valuables (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_treasure_fleet) in ships.

Jord was asked to make a key (http://www.duke.edu/web/isis/gessler/collections/key.jpg) for the lock(s) (http://www.duke.edu/web/isis/gessler/collections/key-ward.jpg) and that is quite a task with the special warding (http://www.duke.edu/web/isis/gessler/collections/key-ward-closeup.jpg). Hopefully I can make a blackbag posting out of that too as it is an interesting process to create such a key. (more nice keys on http://www.duke.edu/web/isis/gessler/collections/locks-keys.htm)

The exact location of the remaining boxes has to be kept secret for now not to give anyone any ideas. There will be a follow up soon (after LockCon.US (http://toool.us/lockcon/)) and hopefully we can solve some more mysteries then.

Impressioning champion of the world?
How I won the US impressioning games and became fourth at the lockpick games. And a little on how LockCon went.
-------------------------------------
There was a little confusion how to call the championships at LockCon. Should we call them US open or World Championships? (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lockcon-us.jpg)

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/08/barryimpressioningchampion700-1.jpg

To keep a long story short: I won (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/score.jpg) the first US impressioning championships (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lockcon-impressioning-champion.jpg). And it was a close call.

The close call was whether or not I would participate. I did not prepare and did not even bring gear (suitcases were full of heavy stuff anyway). It was my new friend Ben Sherman (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/ben-sherman-lsi-instructor.jpg) who persuaded me to participate and generously gave me his file. And Jord (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/jord-knaap-impressioning.jpg) gave me his spare handle. What followed was me winning all three rounds (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/2012-impressioning-championships-locks-barry-wels-.jpg). And in the third round I was nicely focused (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/barry-wels-impressioning-focussed.jpg) and the only finalist (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/winning-impressioning-key.jpg) to open the six pin lock in 60 minutes. We are all happy the title (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/best-at-impressioning.jpg) goes back to the Netherlands (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/impressioning-title-stays-in-holland.jpg).

Even though I won a number (http://blackbag.nl/?p=227) of international championships (http://blackbag.nl/?p=241), I am not really much of a competitive player. For me it is more important to be able to open a wide variety of locks in a decent time. This is what I teach at Lock-Experts (PDF) (http://lock-experts.com/lock-experts-advanced-impressioning.pdf) and rely on as a locksmith at intact-noodopening.nl. (http://intact-noodopening.nl/sleutels_verloren.html) But I can not deny it is a good feeling to win.

LockCon 2012 LockPick championships … of the world?

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/08/lockpickchampionslockcon2012700-1.jpg (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lockpick-champions-lockcon-2012.jpg)

Torsten Quast won the lockpicking games, followed by Julian Hardt and Jord Knaap.

I ended sharing the fourth place with “handcuff Ray” (http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2012/07/16/hacker-opens-high-security-handcuffs-with-3d-printed-and-laser-cut-keys/). And that is a pity because after a long number of elimination rounds both Julian and I were the only ones who were not defeated. But then I got into a pool of three people and lost, followed by a battle to the finals with Ray. And we both did not open (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brink0x3f/7619975964/in/set-72157630693034208/) any of the US Corbin locks (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/4th-place-corbin.jpg) ending us both at the fourth place.

All fun aside, Torsten seemed to like the idea of being the ‘unofficial’ world champion lockpicking. The Toool board had long discussions on how to organize the first “official” world-championships of LockPicking and Impressioning in the future (in corporation with other sportgroups like SSDeV, Fools etc). The way we envision it is that every locksport and (possibly) locksmith community in the world should organize their own championships and the winners of each of these competitions will be sponsored to fly to LockCon for the first official world championships. But don’t hold your breath for it to happen soon.

What else happened at LockCon?

Besides the warning (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/interesting-weather.jpg) for tornado’s (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/changing-weather.jpg) all went fine.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/08/touratsargentandgreenleaf-1.jpg

LockCon was held at the LSI facility. (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lockcon-at-lsi.jpg) A great place (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/playground.jpg) with its own museum. (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lsi-lock-museum.jpg) Good for ours of looking (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/museum1.jpg) at special locks (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/unique-locks.jpg). There were unique locks (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/lots-of-locks.jpg) and keys (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/keys.jpg) all over the place.

We organized some workshops (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/workshops-lockcon.jpg) on interesting topics (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/new-skils.jpg). At the tour trough the S&G factory (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/tour-at-sargent-and-greenleaf.jpg) we learned they had the ultimate safe to protect what is precious to you. (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/secure-the-things-you-love.jpg)

Lots of networking (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/happy-lockpickers.jpg) was done at the late night parties. People would show off (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/tools-at-the-party-blurr.jpg) their latest (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/sput01.jpg) tool development (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/interesting-devices.jpg), reverse engineer interesting hardware (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/reverse-engineer-interesting-hardware.jpg), make new friends (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/new-friends.jpg) and drink till all becomes blurry. (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/party-blurr.jpg)

Just google for lockcon and find lots of interesting archives (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brink0x3f/sets/72157630693034208/) full of nice pictures.

Thanks everyone for making LockCon possible and hope to see you soon at a new event!

International Lockpick party in Hamburg Dec. 28
invitation to lockpicker party in Hamburg December 28
-------------------------------------
At the end of the year there always is the CCC congress (see FAQ (https://events.ccc.de/congress/2012/wiki/FAQ) for details). Very informative and worth your time.

This year the congress (http://events.ccc.de/2012/11/08/cch-a-brief-introduction/) will be in Hamburg (instead of Berlin like previous years).

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/11/ILP-1.jpg (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/ilpp.pdf)

Since Hamburg is the city where locksport more or less was born, it is the ideal place to organize an international lockpicker party. On December 28th all lockpickers are welcome at the party.

And this weekend there is the Czech lockpick championships (http://www.lockpickers.cz/index.php/11-mistrovstvi/20-championship-2012). I am curious what kind of locks (http://www.catalocks.com/) they will use!

Hope to see you there!

Czech lockpick championships
short blogposting on the Czech lockpick championships
-------------------------------------
http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/11/czech-1.jpg (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/czech-.jpg)

Just a short blogposting this time to get me starting blogging again :)

Last weekend had a great time near Prague at the Czech lockpick championships. The Czech are friendly, well organized and sure (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/4TQ-1.jpg) have a lot (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/TQ-2.jpg) of very (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/4TQ-3.jpg) exotic (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/4TQ-4.jpg) locks (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/4TQ-5.jpg).

Our German friends from SSDeV kept scores on their blog (in German) (http://blog.ssdev.org/?p=1628).

Below a small video of one of the rounds in ‘freestyle’. Many electronic pickguns and very fast opening times.

Electro picks, lockpick competition and back from Poland
New Toool competition lock and the smallest, most powerful, most silent and (unfortunately) the most expensive electro-pick on my wishlist.
-------------------------------------
http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/12/fab-1.jpg (http://toool.nl/competitie/)

Interesting news. The Dutch Toool (http://toool.nl/) division just released the locks for tenth Toool lockpick competition (http://toool.nl/competitie/).

It does contain some interesting locks. A lot of people donate to the collection and my contribution (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1019.html) are locks picked up (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1001.html) in south (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1003.html)-Africa (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1009.html) and other (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1023.html) countries (http://toool.nl/competitie/slot-T1011.html).

Not all locks have been identified by Jos Weyers (who photographed all the locks). If you can help him identify some of the unknown locks that would be appreciated.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2012/12/multipickmhpII-1.jpg (http://www.multipick-service.com/htdocs/en/werkzeug/picksets/elektropicks/multipick_MHP.php)

At the competition only manual hand picks are allowed. Electro-picks are not allowed. If they were, I know what tool to use. By far the best electro-pick on the market (http://www.multipick-service.com/htdocs/en/werkzeug/picksets/elektropicks/multipick_MHP.php) is made by Multipick in Germany (http://shop.multipick-service.com/?language=en).

I spoke with one of the developers at the Interkey locksmith show (http://www.iks2012.com/) in Poland last weekend and got some impressive demo’s. They make the smallest, most powerful, most silent and (unfortunately) the most expensive (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/auch.jpg) electro-pick on my wishlist.

I hope Santa will not forget about me this year…

intact-noodopening.nl logo contest
Need help finding the right logo for my locksmith venue.
-------------------------------------
As some of you might know I run a small 24/7 locksmith in the Amsterdam area called Intact-Noodopening.nl (http://intact-noodopening.nl/Welkom.html)

The idea behind intact is to open locks, doors (http://intact-noodopening.nl/sleutels_verloren.html), cars and safes (http://intact-noodopening.nl/kluis-sleutel.html) without damaging the lock. Basically I am being paid to practice in the field what I teach in my classes.

Truth is that at this moment not a whole lot of work is coming trough. And I outsource most of it since I simply do not have much time.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2013/01/intactnoodopeninglogocontest-1.jpg (https://99designs.com/logo-design/vote-q9l9hq)

Never the less I decided I needed a good logo for this venue. Instead of annoying my standard logo designer I took another route: putting it for bid on 99 designs.com (https://99designs.com/) . So far there are three designs thar stick out.

Can you help me by selecting the logo you like (https://99designs.com/logo-design/vote-q9l9hq) for a locksmith that specializes in non-destructive entry?

Thanks in advance!

Transporting safes
Jord knaap (kjs-tools) came out with a clever solution to transport safes and vaults. With the KJS safe-transporter one person can transport safes. And there is no need for specialized trucks/vans. Easy does it!
-------------------------------------
Jord Knaap from KJS tools has come out with a new line of products in his 2014 catalog (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/kjs-catalog-2014-preview.jpg).

With one of his products he solves a problem that is encountered by safe-technicians around the world: how to transport a heavy safe with just one person? Or how to transport a heavy safe without a specialized hydraulic van?

Jord solved this with his KJS-safe transporter (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/KJS-safe-transporter.pdf). And I really like it a lot!

With this simple tool just one person can transport a heavy safe. As you can see in the video it’s pretty simple to load and unload and transport it. The nice thing is that you can also use it for transporting other objects the size of a euro-pallet.

Jord does not have all his tools available online. If you are a safe-tech (or high-end locksmith) and want his new ’2014 catalog’ I suggest you contact him directly (http://blackbag.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/kjs-tools-jord-knaap-contact-adres-data.jpg).

End of an era
Final post on the blackbag site. So long and goodbye.
-------------------------------------
http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2014/05/bye-1.jpg

Becoming the first impressioning world champion (http://blackbag.nl/?p=2154) really paved the way to become a full time lock-professional (http://lock-experts.com/Welcome_to_WSS.html). After that I left my comfort zone and signed a contract with Lockmasters Technologies, Inc (http://locktechinc.com/) in 2012. I am one of their European distributors (http://www.qtactical.com/) and assist them in any way I can (working from Amsterdam). So far it has been a dream come true.

Besides the work for Lockmasters Technologies, Inc I run some (http://lock-experts.com/Courses.html)lock-related classes (http://lock-experts.com/Contact_and_schedule.html) from Amsterdam (and on location in Europe) with my private company Wels Security Solutions / Lock-Experts.com (http://lock-experts.com/Welcome_to_WSS.html).
Last but not least my company “intact locksmith services” (http://intact-noodopening.nl/Welkom.html) opens doors (http://intact-noodopening.nl/sleutels_verloren.html), safes (http://intact-noodopening.nl/kluis-sleutel.html) and cars (http://intact-noodopening.nl/auto_opening.html) in a non-destructive way (http://intact-noodopening.nl/kluis-combinatie.html). In reality I forward a lot of the intact support calls to locksmith colleagues that do have time to take the job. So working for Intact has my lowest priority but is a nice way to keep my skills sharp and stay in touch with what happens in the real world.

I could never have come this far without the help of my friends in the locksport community. I am very fortunate with the friends I have made over the years. And I am happy to see that others have made the step to the lock industry as well. Just to name two: Han Fey and Dr. Torsten Quast are now working for Assa Abloy, the largest lock manufacturer in the world. It is my believe many “lock enthusiasts” will follow…

I decided to transfer my Toool (NL) leadership position in 2013. New Toool president Walter Belgers and vice president Jos Weyers are perfect for the job and have my full trust and support.

One of the things they did is to extend LockCon by one full day. The dates for the three day event are: September 19/20/21. This is the weekend before the security show in Essen (to encourage international travelers to come). The extra day will be used for more presentations and workshops and I am already looking forward to attend it. The LockCon request for talks / presentations is open.

The end of an era

All good things come to an end and so does this weblog. This is the last post before it closes.

This does not mean I will be completely off the radar. Lockmasters Technologies, Inc just started a newsletter (http://locktechinc.com/news/) that I am contributing to. I am sure you will enjoy (http://locktechinc.com/news/?p=108) some of the articles (http://locktechinc.com/news/?p=347) there.
And there is the regularly updated “Intact locksmith services” facebook site (https://www.facebook.com/intactnoodopening) for you to visit and “like” (thank you!).

I have not made up my mind what to do with BlackBag’s content. If you want to capture any of the information: the blog will be at least up until September and I will make a decision after that.

Thank you for your interest and support over the years.

Feel free to contact me (http://lock-experts.com/Contact_and_schedule_files/lock-experts-700.jpg) for anything related to locks and security.

Blackbag signing out. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJNsQPRSWpY)

The keys are in a protective metal holder and they have 5 hollow pins.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2014/11/2014kluis2-1.jpg

The lock is opened by inserting the key fully and the retracting it. The mechanism is such that closing the lock after it has been opened, resets the lock mechanism. On the key you can see a horizontal stripe, this is a metal strip that, when removed, allows the key to be re-keyed.

People showed up from all over the world, making new friends, discussing new locks and lock opening techniques and just having a good time in general.

An important part of LockCon is the Toool Dutch Open Championships in lockpicking and impressioning. And, thanks to Jord, this year we also had a lever lock opening competition.

The impressioning competition was won by Manfred B

Jaakko will talk about the process of tool-building (looking for weaknesses, choosing materials and the actual build)
Alexandre has an innovative way of doing dual-component impressioning
Michael will give a talk about locks in German alarm systems
there will be a safe manipulation workshop, lecture and championship
Jord will host a workshop on working with some new safe opening tools
Legion303 will take us through the process of building lock picks
Rob will do a fun talk about lockpicking in movies
on Friday night well try something we have never done at LockCon before (and cant yet tell you about) -No Press-

datagram will host his famous tamper workshop
decoder will shed some light on the mediahit that is 3d printing of restricted blanks
Marnix will bring some 3D printers, so we can get some hands-on results
Legion303 will show us how to defeat the cyberlock
Jaakko will show his new safecracking tool
we are very grateful we will host our annual impressioning championship on C83 cylinders donated by ABUS.

Alexandre will show us a technique to manipulate and decode Disec locks
And off course we will be hosting the annual Dutch Open Lockpicking Championships.

The article describes professional key duplication services. A few weeks ago, TOOOL member Tom decided to spend an afternoon to see if he could make a model of a standard key to be printed on a cheap consumer grade 3D printer. Here is the first result:

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2014/11/3d2-1.jpg

And here’s a picture of two printed keys with an original. The cuts were measured and printed.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2014/11/3d1-1.jpg

Here you see the key is working, although you can feel you have to be careful not to apply too much force.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2014/11/3d3-1.jpg

The thing the consumer grade printer has most problems with, it first printing separate blobs of plastic that only connect to the rest of the key as the profile is being printed. This means the key had to be lightly filed after printing, to make it operate the lock.

Barry Wels is founder and long-time president of Toool, The Open Organisation of Lockpickers. In August, 2013, he stepped down from the Toool board to focus on his new company. I am the new president of Toool since then.

Barry has very kindly given Toool the opportunity to take over blackbag. We will be trying to get some interesting lock-related content on here in the near future! And there’s more good news: all the old content will remain available.

I would like to thank Barry for his outstanding work and hope to see all of you around on Blackbag in the years to come.

Jord Knaap lives in Groningen and he is one of the members that is far away from both places. The good news is: he decided to take upon him to host Toool-meetings in Groningen! So with that, Toool is strategically placed throughout the Netherlands.

The first meeting will be held coming saturday, January 24th, starting at 17:00 hours at Cafe-Bar Jan Westerhoff (http://cafejanwesterhoff.weebly.com/), Rijksweg 4 in Groningen (https://www.google.nl/maps/place/Rijksweg+4,+9731+AA+Groningen/@53.2259774,6.5977713,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x47c9d2bc3c27cf2b:0x3c66b 98616f63497).

Jord is planning to have monthly meeting to start with. If you are interested, please go to the first meeting. This way, you can discuss what the best date and place is to have the meetings. Jord would like to know who is coming, so please also mail him in advance at jord@knaapjunior.nl. They come so we can try to open the thing without destroying it. As you can read elsewhere on blackbag, we’ve opened quite a few WWII crypto-devices for instance.

Yesterday, somebody visited us with an old time-clock. The lock looks simple indeed, but took considerable time to open, revealing the interesting mechanics on the inside. The owner was happy and so were we!

Martin found such a lock in a store in Belgium. The funny thing? The lock had actually picked itself during transport, probably due to vibrations, inside the packaging!

April 24th, a delegation of Toool visited the Euro-Locks factory in Bastogne, Belgium.

Sales manager Jean-Louis Vincart welcomed us and talked us through the history of Euro-Locks, the factories and products. After that, we visited the actual production facility. The Bastogne factory is huge and almost all of their products are completely build here. We spoke with the R&D people creating new molds, saw molten zamac, steel presses, chrome baths, assembly lines and packaging, so everything from the raw metal to the finished product. It’s interesting to see so many products (both in range of products and the actual number of produced locks) being made here, and having no stock of the finished product.

Thanks to Eric and Martin for making the visit possible.

My latest talk was also the most interesting. It was at the wonderful t2.fi (http://t2.fi/) conference in Helsinki, Finland.

I was there in 2014 as well. This year, I could only speak again if Id open Finnish locks. And Finnish locks are amongst the most secure.. Almost everybody in Finland has ASSA Abloy locks on their door. Many Fins believe these are unpickable. So I set myself the task to open these locks.

First, I tried the H&H tool for opening Abloy. I then found out this tool does not work and simply cannot work, unless you can set the discs in order. So this was money wasted. I finally was able to purchase a tool from Citadel LockTools (CitadelLockTools@hotmail.com) in the UK, that can actually open (and decode) Abloy Classic locks.

The tool comes with several tips, for different kinds of locks. I bought a few handbag locks and its interesting to see that they differ. In one, the deepest disc is locked, not so in the other. They both need a different tip.

I had ordered a cheap transparant padlock out of China. Although it is a six pin lock, I could pick it touching only two of the six pins. I took a look at it and it’s interesting to see how costs were cut (the lock costs about $3 in bulk). Material has been drilled from the plug to save material. Also, the top and bottom pins are the same pins. This influences the security of the lock. If the pin is stack is not neatly at the sheer line, it will still open as the tipped pin will wiggle itself into the correct position. This is why picking one third of the pins suffices in this case.

I then looked at some euro cilinders in the same price range. It turns out that effectively, they have only one pin that needs to be set. You can use a random key to wiggle the lock open. Even more shocking is the fact that some people will actually put such a lock on their front door.

Its a six pin cilinder, and the keys vary quite a lot in thickness when you go down. At some points it more than doubles between cuts!
So basically, lots of Jos fancy tools were rather unusable for this one. But, it took only two blanks and the better part of 45 minutes (which included a phonecall) but in the end it did open!

The keyway is way different to what he usually encounters during competitions (which would be the old trusted C83) so it was a good thing a handful of blanks were thrown in as well

After some researching on the internet, it turned out that these are meant to pick certain magnetic locks that are manufactured in China. Outside of China, you will likely not come across these locks.

The silver coloured piece can only turn, the brass piece has a push knob at the end. After some googling, Marcel found a YouTube video explaining the lock (not the tool), made by Lockman28, to be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZNUgsplYk4.

Things are moving along rather nicely. The registration has opened and a lot of the usual suspects have already registered. We are however still missing quite a lot of our regular visitors. Please do not forget to register, because we have a limited number of rooms. Just showing up on the day will probably mean you cannot get in anymore!

Lots of people are submitting talks. We love it! Keep them coming! People who have submitted a talk will be contacted later, when we have a preliminary schedule. There is room for lightning talks as well.

There is a logo for LockCon 2016 as you can see. This year, we have decided not to print shirts, to avoid a pile of left overs once LockCon is over. Anybody want to buy a shirt from 2014? This year we do have shirts, but they are printed on demand and you can order them yourselves. We offer these on a non profit basis via the shirt shop of our good friends at Hack42. You can order either a mans T-shirt (https://shop.spreadshirt.nl/hack42/lockcon+-+garderen+2016+--+male+shirt-A200203271?appearance=2), womens T-shirt (https://shop.spreadshirt.nl/hack42/lockcon+-+garderen+2016+--+female+shirt-A200203178?appearance=2), mini person T-shirt (https://shop.spreadshirt.nl/hack42/lockcon+-+garderen+2016+--+child+shirt-A200203179?appearance=2) or a hoodie (https://shop.spreadshirt.nl/hack42/lockcon+-+garderen+2016+-+hoodie-A200208444?department=1&productType=93&color=00224C&appearance=4&view=2).

If you want to use a different (local/cheaper/DIY) printshop, feel free to use the logo above.

Cutaway locks are a nice way to understand the inner working of a lock. Many lock companies make factory cutaways of their models, but they can be hard to get. There are also companies making (pad)locks out of plastic to show the inner workings. And then there are locks made into cutaways by lock lovers.

Many exist, but the locks created by ‘Lock Cracker’ are in a separate class. Using a CNC milling machine he is able to cut away lots of material so you can see how the pins move, but also how the actual locking mechanism works. The most interesting are high security locks that have special features, such as the Ross Emhart lock that has interconnecting pins. Or his newest creation, the Mul-T-Lock MT5+. This lock uses pins within pins. The outer pins have been individually cut to show the inner pin within. Truly a masterpiece.

Although many locks now feature electronic features, at the Security Essen fair, enough interesting fully mechanical locks could be seen. Some companies, like Iseo, have decided to focus solely on electronics at this event. Other companies show that new mechanical features can still be invented. Evva showcased the new 4KS which is a continuation of the 3KS. I found the ICS with Temporary Access Function more interesting from a mechanical standpoint. This cylinder comes with two user keys, of which one only works after putting the lock in temporary access mode with a change key. Mottura showed cylinders with a magnet in the key, to defeat lockpicking. DOM has a new cylinder that has keys that are even harder to duplicate. Abus showed a really neat new modular system that makes it very easy to change the length of any of their cylinders without using special tools, not even a screwdriver. A very simple and elegant solution that works really well.

The company Master showed an impressioning key for single row dimple locks, that uses a metal wire to impression in. It needs quite a bit of force to impression, hence a tool is used for that. In the video you can see it in action.

Now off to LockCon 2016!

The first day of LockCon has come to an end (at least, the official program). We had a talk by MH and Lucas about Chinese locks. What threats do they try to protect against? What new techniques are being used? Featuring the famous “free spinning lock” and the “chain-key lock”. Jord Knaap had some interesting stories about his work as a safe opener. He also showed some very new safe opening techniques. Deviant talked about keyed-alike locks in the USA. Who would have thought that when the policy (or taxi companies) order keyed-alike cars, they are actually all keyed alike? Jimmie and Cocolitos talked about newly designed picks that work really well on many types of locks. Ray disassembled some wireless locks and found some interesting vulnerabilities (including a 0day). Kenny learned us all about OpenSCAD. We will not go into too much detail. The event is invite-only for a reason ;-).

And we had also time for the impressioning championships. Abus kindly sponsored a bunch of Abus C83 cylinders and key blanks. After a first round, the first six went to the final, all having to open six new locks. The winner was Alexandre, Oli became second and Jord third.

Jord gave a workshop lever lock picking, to prepare attendees for the championship tomorrow. After that, Peter Field discussed techniques used by lock manufacturers, with his wonderful pictures that show the working in fantastic detail. Next, Jan and Michael talked about their adventures milling EVVA 3KS keys. Eric came across a certain motorbike lock that needed opening and he decided to use a decoder for it of which he explained the working. The evening was ended by the premiere of American Lockpicker, a documentary about Schuyler Towne by Ben Hartman.

And we had also time for the lockpicking championships. A whopping 48 people competed. After 8 rounds, 6 people went through to the semi-finals and three of those played the final rounds. It turned out to be very exciting, with all three contestants opening all three locks within the 15 minutes they had for each lock. In the end, Christian was the fastest and thus became the winner. I would like to thank Abus (https://www.abus.com/) for sposoring the cylinders and blanks used for the impressioning championships. Then there were several companies who have sponsored prizes for the winners. M&C (http://en.m-c.eu/) sponsored a whole bunch of their cylinders, but one really stood out: it is their new Condor cylinder, a cutaway version of it, but huge and fully functional! On the picture you see it, next to a regular M&C cylinder to give you an idea of the size. A real eye catcher! Sparrows Lockpicks (http://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/) sponsored coupons in worth of $800, Peterson (http://www.thinkpeterson.com/) gave away several of his famous picksets, Knaap Junior (http://www.knaapjunior.nl/) gave away polo shirts and both Tokoz (http://tokoz.cz/) and Barry Wels (http://intact-noodopening.nl) gave away some cylinders. Thanks!

All prize winners also received a plaque in the form of a working model of a pin stack, as per the design Kenny McElroy (http://octosavvi.com/pin-tumbler-lock-interactive-diagram/):

Decoder talked about how he created a tool to pick the DOM Diamant lock. Jaakko talked about his research on safe combination locks that could lead to such locks being opened in a few minutes.

After that, we had a lever lock competition. Last time, this was an impromptu thing, this year it was a real competition with a record number of participants. With only 2 minutes per lock in the first round, this was quickfire picking. Still, all the 10 groups had at least one person open a lock. The fastest 10 then tried to open six locks in the final. Only Lars succeeded in opening all six, winning him first prize.

In it is a collection of Chinese locks. The first one (marked AFA) has two rows of dimples, 10 in total, and a wavy line. The lock is typical Chinese in that it comes with two keys that are used during construction, and several (in this case 5) user keys that are seperetely packaged. A special programming key is used to disable the construction keys and enable the user keys.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2016/12/201612lockcon03-1.jpg

The second one does not seem to be reprogrammable. It comes with six keys and it is one of these Chinese locks that has a free spinning plug. The key connects the two parts of the plug, allowing the lock to operate.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2016/12/201612lockcon04-1.jpg

The next lock is a padlock with a ‘smiley’ key profile. There are pins on both sides.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2016/12/201612lockcon05-1.jpg

The next lock is a cilinder that again has two construction keys and a closed box that holds the (six) user keys. There is no reprogramming key: any user key will do. The construction keys have a slit at the end of the key, the user keys do not. This cilinder has a quite nice looking anti-breaking element, as has the free spinning lock. On the key we read “safety is derived from technology, Kailusidun”.

http://www.zamkidveri.com/forum/images/imported/2016/12/201612lockcon06-1.jpg

The last lock is a padlock made by Zhongxin. The key has two rods and the lock has two holes. The key does not rotate, it needs to be inserted after which a button on the lock can be pushed to unlock it. Removing the key locks the lock again.

Every year, Toool NL has a competition that is only open to Toool NL members. A box of around 25 locks travels to all meetings where members can try to pick the locks. What makes this quite different from regular competitions, is that you can get to learn the lock. You are allowed to improve your best picking time throughout the year, figuring out what tool works best and in what order you need to set the pins.

We assembled 26 locks this year, ranging from used locks with no apparant brand name to factory new locks. Last years competition was pretty stiff, so we settled for what we believe are slightly easier locks, but time will tell if they really are.

The competition page is at https://toool.nl/competitie2017/.
