It's the perfect lock for a communist country because everyone owns everything so it should be easy to open so you can use what you own.

Like many things from this era, it seems to be built to be very good at exactly whatever was had in mind for it and not the slightest thing more. Hardy, cheap, and has a easy bypass trick that wouldn't be apparent to just any schmuck expecting a normal lock. You don't always want a lock with super invincible security. It's actually befuddling how secure Masterlock LOTO equipment is compared to the rest of their trash for this exact reason.

And yeah, it looks really cool.

Look, I'm not saying that I buy into the whole 'deterrent' idea thing, but I can only imagine most anyone that would even consider picking their way into something would only look at this weird ass thing in complete bewilderment. I obviously haven't seen one of these up close, but it isn't immediately obvious that it has such a glaring design flaw without seeing the key operate it.

Not that there aren't other 'less brain-more muscle' techniques that would blaze through this thing easily enough(like a torquing attack), but that's beside the point...

No pliers. Use a potato or a beet. Common tools of the day.

This reminds me of a padlock I found in the former Yugoslavia a few years ago at an abandoned political prison on a medical lab cabinet. It is a TETAR and is in pretty poor condition and I have not tried to open it. The keyway is on the front and could probably have been easily opened with a hairpin. Very cheaply made and has the appearance of a toy lock. Was probably chrome plated in its day but is very rusty now.

I really like that lock and have not seen it before but a huge pity it was defeated with a common tool. ??

Great find LPL ! But i always get angry when im scrolling in coments trying to find more info about those rare and special locks, because many people just coment without some logic and knowlege and they could go away from the subject or any point in total. No ofends but it seems to me that it is the problem. So lets reveal some facts .....

-First thing ,this is the USSR basic security lock ,so no one should expect something more of it.If it is stamped 50k-2R,80k it is the basic and nothing else.Every country have or had them so that was the case in USSR too.
-Secound thing, this padlock is not from lock factory at all ,it is from the factory who made hospital beds but some other factories made the simmilar model too.Their main products were not padlocks,so they made them but only as folowing equipment or for somebody else who ordered them and didnt had logistic for making them.
-Third thing ,this padlock could be compared with CAT padlock in speaking of security, but with much more diferent system ,we could say ,not literally but simmilar to the german SYSTEM DULV in its own way.
-Fourth fact, this padlock must be simple because in -40C, it still must be opened so without the key, pliers wont do anything. Many soviet padlocks are not so sofisticated because of harsh weather and low temperatures so sofisticated security doesent work .Also if the soviet police bust you ,you will be in a world of shit for sure and chances of survival are not at your side,so with hard laws ,KGB,police, gulags etc there was no need for high security.
-Fifth fact, if you think that soviet didnt made good padlocks you are so wrong, they made many perfect locks. One third of all padlocks were disc detainers wery simmilar to the SIG enviromental but with much more discs.Americans were/ are masters of advertise so they can make it good and shiny, mostly because of hard competiton between factories, which was not the case in the USSR.At that time there was no private factories ,all were owned by the state so they didnt care about estetics.High security locks were priced from 4-7 R.
-Sixth fact, in America and Russia are rednecks and simple people too as well as smart with lots of knowlege and abilities.Every country is a colour ,but in diferent part of spectre so the thing is the same.Every country can make locks but some of them have the policy to import them and some to make them .
-Sevent fact ,the Communism and the Capitalism are the same.In theory ,very good in real life ,small amount of choosen are rich others work for that minority to be richer and dont have enough time for themselves and their family.Just ask your self ,how many hours did you spent on working and how on spending some qouality time for improveing yourself, with family,in the nature etc.Off course you will say ,its normal thing, wrok and you will have the money.Ok you have it,you spend it but you need time to use and enjoy that things you bought .All in all , if we personalize those two systems, the Communism is a naked guy so you could easily see every bad things and the Capitalism is sexy sharp dressed guy with shiny and glossy clothes, with the same bad things but hidden by the clothes.People suffer in both systems, excuses are endless but the thing is same.........
The last fact, this type of padlock doesent have any springs or pins at all, some versiones doo but seems that this one doesent. It has only a two evaginations ,one cut on the bottom of that ,,cylinder so the key could snag in and thats all. This lock can unlock it self if its subjected to shakeing ,if it is atached to some machine so it isnt for moveing objects.Anyway the system is specials as i mantioned because of freezeing and no sofisticated technology can work on low temperatures........
HunterShows HunterShows 15.02.2019->Heh, they were masters of technological theft. This is a uniquely Russian lock; I would expect to find reasonable copies of whatever the west used as well.
