Rookie Lock Rookie Lock 25.12.2018
Yes! I've been looking forward to this video. I have a lock that reminds me of this lock, It's a J&J taylor, it doesnt have any numbers where the contact points are. And the contact points are extreamily hard to feel. (unlinke the S&Gs I'm used to with unmistakable points) Would you mind If I did a collaborative manipulation video of my own? If not that's fine. Great stuff buddy, Happy Holidays! Looking forward to learning more about manipulation !
Rookie Lock Rookie Lock 29.12.2018->Yeah, It's an old bugger, you can only mount it LH orientation, I honestly dont think I'll be manipulating it any time soon, still learning the ropes on the S&G, just gotta find some time to sit down and have a spin. I'm pretty confident I can get it open though, Looking forward to more of your Manipulation series!
Michael Maynard Michael Maynard 29.12.2018->Just took a closer look at that video. Looks like an old gravity fence, the Americans were in love with that stuff in the late 1800s through to the early part of the 1900s. You're gonna need to mount that thing up really solidly, get rid of ALL the slop, make sure the spindle is straight and spline key tight, get the back on, and THEN start work on it. I've never seen one of those, we just don't have them in New Zealand. That is an awesome project mate.
Rookie Lock Rookie Lock 28.12.2018->+Michael Maynard The JJ Taylor, yup video 91.. Their is no spring on the fence arm so hence why I cant feel any contacts. Like I said It's a super old lock, I also think the spindle shaft is bent a bit. Im quite new to Manipulation which is why I'd like to make a collaborative manipulation video on my S&G 6741.. I only know the basic principles though.
Michael Maynard Michael Maynard 28.12.2018->Hey bro - I'd love to see a video on yours - is it the one in vid 82 / 91?

Hi Michael, Well done, I thought you had dropped off the ends of the earth! I believe this grey case lock is a 7L05, they also produced a black case lock, not sure of the correct designation. We just call them Chubb 3 wheelers. The locks were similar, but there were variations in the contour of the drive cams. The very old version had a drive cam gate similar to the S&G - with a ramp. They then went to the drive cam without a ramp, so the changes on the dial are much smaller. Later Chubb 4 wheel vault locks had this newer drive cam also. I noticed a tiny movement between spindle, drive cam, and spline key, as you know they should be as one. This will definitely mask consistent contact readings, making manipulation more difficult. Just a tip, remove spline key and using a centre punch, dimple the spline key leg and replace. Regards, Brian.
Michael Maynard Michael Maynard 23.12.2018->Thanks Brian - that little tip is going to get pride of place in a video coming up shortly - I've got a lock that needs exactly this.

Michael Maynard Michael Maynard 23.12.2018->Thanks bro. I like to tell it how it is, warts and all. That said, this beast taught me a shitload so I'm glad I put in the effort.
