do newer versions contain other pins than just spools?<br>I have two 85/50s and some are incredibly easy to pick just like spools. And then there is another one i have wich is really hard and i keep dropping pins

When I first saw your videos it took me a long time to understand what a lot of your vocabulary meant. Great job on this video but I wish it was titled more like a tutorial or beginner video as this would have been a great resource for me back in the day.

          @darrenruck2058 29.08.2017->It probably doesn't help that i'm using a beginners set of picks, that also came with one of those see through padlocks.
I think the first pin is standard, and i get to pin 3, which is stiff, but as i try and set it, it jumps, probably too much pressure. If i can get it to go, i get the feedback.

          @DionysusFascinus 01.11.2017->I also could not get into those at first, I'm pretty succesfull now. Thought it was my picks at first and bought the dangerfield praxis kit. The deforest pick really gave me a feel for these locks, sadly that went away straight after I rounded the edges and polished it. This forced me to use a regular hook though and now they open just fine for me.

Just keep going at it and maybe try some different tensioning methods those had the biggest impact for me.

I get what a false set is <b>technically</b> just by picking up on your usage of the phrase and observation, but I&#39;m having a hard time pinning it down etymologically. Like, what is a &quot;set&quot; in general, why is this &quot;false&quot;, are there any other kinds of sets. I can kinda guess but your usage is still infrequent and specific enough that my understanding is still a little fuzzy.<br><br>I arrived on your channel for the first time a couple weeks ago on one of those random YouTube rabbit holes and was really drawn to the approachably technical tone and explanations (and stories (and intros, hot damn)), even as a total layman. Thanks for the awesome videos. :)
          @Makrond 16.08.2017->Since it's impossible to create an inline lock with perfect tolerances and still have it work smoothly, if you apply tension to a lock the core will rotate slightly and move the holes drilled into it slightly out of alignment with the holes drilled into the top of the lock, creating a sort of ledge. 'Setting' a pin means applying enough tension and raising the pin high enough against the spring tension that the upper pin, which bill calls a 'driver pin', rests on this ledge, which would allow the core to rotate freely were there no other pins blocking this rotation. When part of the pin that is not the bottom of the pin is resting on the ledge, you get a 'false' set of that pin. This most often happens with spool and serrated pins, by design. 'False set' also refers to the slight rotation of the core that occurs when only spool pins remain blocking the shearline, which can cause it to rotate several degrees towards the open position and falsely lead you to believe you've picked it.

The term 'false set' probably originates with lever locks, where a double-action lever made it necessary to lift the levers to precisely the right height, and higher-end lever locks would have false gates, making it feel as though the lever was set to the right height when it wasn't.

          @torq1116 16.08.2017->A "set" would be to have all the pins picked to the shear line and the lock would open. A "False set" is when you get a pin to click and the core starts to turn like it is open, but it is not, because you have picked that pin to the the middle of a spool or to a serration on a serrated pin. Counter rotation is when that same pin is being set the second time to the proper shear line and the core has to turn counter clockwise to accommodate backing out of the spool or serration. Lol, I'm not great at explaining things, but I hope that helps.

This looks a lot like a Master lock I bought from the hardware store, it&#39;s stamped No.150 on the bottom. It has 5 pins on the key and does actually have spools.
