Testing the rotary brushes on an old ABUS. Although shiny looking now, the weak spring tension on the core and the shallow and sharp spools make it a tricky pick.

Great videos, but don't use wire brushes. Cloth with polishing compound will work better and retain the natural look. Also, your drill and brushes are rotating in the wrong direction. Google proper use of grinding and polishing tools. Remember, safety third... Cheers from Canada!

I somehow liked the brushed finish ;D. The reason that there is not much spring tension on the core is from the locking bolts. There is probably a lot of dirt on these and the springs might be weak. Not that easy to clean them out. The last time I used a fine sanding sponge on my 85 with the plastic shackle ;D, but usually metal polishing paste (Elsterglanz, Autosol etc) is the stuff for this job ;). Know that you know that ;) and I like how you made this experiment anyway :D. Cheers buddy :).
          @Potti314 18.09.2017->It's actually good to have this lock like this as it shows what you encounter in the wild. But maybe i soak it in break cleaner to see it helps. Perhaps the spring is rusty and so occupies more space which causes additional friction. Cheers and thanks for watching

It&#39;s nice to see the progress of these locks, from found, to cleaning and picking. I agree about keeping the old finish when it looks good. I have a couple of cut shackle locks, and it feels extra good to open them.
          @Potti314 17.09.2017->Thank you - it's wonderful to get such "presents" once in a while. Like them more than buying new locks - exploring the unknown is exciting and to play with them - cleaning, repaiing, etc. It was a wonderful feeling when these locks popped open the first time.

Nice video! So far I have never polished an old lock, I prefer to keep the patina, but this old lock was ugly anyway, so it was perfect for testing the brushes ??

          @Potti314 17.09.2017->Haha, cool - so now you know. Not the ideal solution for a lock that should be put on display. Maybe the brass wheel with very light pressure?
          @RookieLock 17.09.2017->Yeah. Well for me, It depends on the lock.. some locks come from the factory with a "Brushed" finished.. however some are very shiny from the factory.. I guess it depends what you want the lock to look like ;P I even use sandpaper sometimes.. like my Best brand lock for example. I like the Brushed finish.. It shows less imperfections ;P Thanks again Potti, keep up the great work buddy!

The steel brush maybe better just for the shackle and the brass for the body. I would probably use Brasso polish on the body if was a better lock.? Did you soak it in cleaner to clean the core? ?
          @Potti314 17.09.2017->Definitely not the recommended treatment for a keeper, using the wire brush. When I was still on vacation I had not so many options cleaning the core. So I socked it in a strong dish-wash solution to get the grease and dirt out. Should not be too bad as all is presumably brass and doesn't rust. At home I sprayed WD40 in the core. Not the ideal treatment but sufficed my needs for that particular lock.
