Thats a "type 1 lockout box" used for maintenance, only the master key can be extracted when locked. One use is when doing maintennce on a production line all the keys and other things needed to start the machines are stored there, when the maintanence is over and the one in charge verify that all is in orther opens it to do the starting procedure, sometimes also the box needs to be opened to stop the line because the keys open the "power switch" enclosure are stored there.

googled it and this came back ? • The central control lock can be withdrawn in both the locked and unlocked positions.<br>• The 4 secondary keys are captive and can only be withdrawn when in the locked position.

So conceivably, it would take 5 people to unanimously work together to unlock the box to get whatever is inside?

@LockNoob 13.10.2026->Honestly, not sure of the real life protocol here. Hoping someone will say!

@TequilaDave 14.10.2026->@LockNoob Someone from the Estates department, the Data Centre Manager, IT Server Engineer, Networking Admin and third party electrical contractor would cover it at my work. Thanks for sharing Ash ?

I wonder if that box could hold some kind of master key, for emergencies. It should be "impossible" to lockpick and obvious when broken into.

guess my comment was deleted? anyway its for lockout tagout. i think the wire hinge is there for quick breaking incase anyone loses their key and can be replaced with another wire and since your inside you can replace the missing key lock without drilling holes.

@TheRawketLawnchair 13.10.2026->also control is the only key you can pull out in the lock and unlocked positions. other 4 cant be.

@LockNoob 13.10.2026->I never tried that. Will give it a go!

@LockNoob 13.10.2026->Thanks. Any idea of the process here? Why 5 keys?

@mattbeddw 14.10.2026->@LockNoobthe control key will be held by a senior person who would initially setup the safety precautions and collect the keys from the locks on various bits of equipment and secured them inside a key safe. Then each permit holder working in the isolated zone will take one of the other 4 keys. Only when all the keys are returned can the senior person open the box with their key and restore the system.
If more than 4 need to work on it, then the 4th key is placed in another box and it's 4 keys given out.
Locks 1-4 will be unique but the control will be common across all boxes on the site.
They're not designed to be high security, they're designed to prevent equipment being operated while it's being worked on.
There is a process for opening the boxes if a key goes missing
